PHP Software Developer - Programmer (Part-Time Volunteer)

Position:     PHP Software Developer – Programmer (Part-Time Volunteer)
Location:    USA
Purpose:     Learn to apply programmatic, robust solutions to support and maintain the optimal functionality of MissionNext’s premier job matching website. Support, optimize, and maintain various algorithms to meet customer requirements as PHP and other programming languages and databases evolve.

Key duties: 

  • PHP – Learn the functionality, logic, documentation, and operation of our complex PHP application for the MissionNext website backend.
  • Make recommendations for functional fixes, enhancements, and other functional and performance improvements.
  • Meet with customer service and web developers regularly to discuss functionality, performance, and issues and propose potential solutions.
  • Familiarity with GitLab, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases and able to construct PHP queries for these databases.
  • Able to set priorities and work independently to resolve complex program issues.
  • Coordinate with MissionNext web development team to keep leadership informed of the status of programming and problem resolution.
  • Participate in online MissionNext onboarding, orientation, all-hands and regular meetings whenever possible.
  • Respond promptly to emails, voicemails, and text messages.
  • Represent MissionNext in all interactions (both internal and external) with integrity and respect.
  • Other duties as assigned and agreed upon.

 Time Commitment:  This is a part-time, volunteer position requiring 5-10 hours per week.

 Organization:

There is no office space for this position; the candidate will work from home using his/her own computer and high-speed internet. Day-to-day interactions will be through email, telephone, and video conferencing.

Worker Status:

Part-time volunteer; support-based or self-supported. Pre-approved expenses may be reimbursed.

Education:

BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering, MIS, or similar relevant field degree or related discipline from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.

Experience and Skills:

  • PHP programming expertise with latest PHP release (8.2.15) also with experience upgrading older versions of PHP (5.4.16) to newer versions.
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with Laravel PHP Web framework, MySQL, and PostgreSQL and query scripts to access database data.
  • Able to work independently, with positive, “can-do” attitude. Creative and efficient analytical person.
  • Good record of successful software development and execution with measurable results.
  • Excellent people skills, creative, self-starter, and the ability to quickly assess software development needs and establish and execute plans to move forward.
