The Thrill of Being Sent

We celebrate that Jesus knew what His assignment was and carried it out.

When a professional football player takes the field, he doesn’t have to ask where he should go or what he should do. He goes to the position on the field that he has been trained for; then, when the play starts, he carries out his assignment. It is thrilling and rewarding for the player. As Christians, we celebrate that Jesus was sent to His assigned place. He knew what His assignment was, and He carried it out.

We are now being sent to be His witnesses. “He said to them: “… But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”” Acts 1:8 That assignment is local, in our area, in our region and to the ends of the earth. It is all of the above, from above. It is a high calling. God Himself commits to be with us, “He said to them:…’But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.'” Matthew 28:18,20  He is committed to us at all times wherever we go to serve Him. The question is: How committed are we to Him? How committed are we to pray along with Him and to Him to send forth laborers? How committed are we to be the answer to that prayer?

Jesus is asking us to be committed with our whole life. He is not asking something of us he would not do Himself. It may not be easy, but it is rewarding. “And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.” Matthew 19:29 ““Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age…and in the age to come eternal life.” Mark 10:29-30 It is impossible to get these dividends anywhere else! 1. What a great analogy about how and where we can serve. And the exciting and amazing thing about my purpose and my calling is that it has MY name on it! I can’t have your assignment and you can’t have mine. Whether it’s teaching in Africa, church planting in Asia or street evangelism in the US, God has a specific assignment that only we, with our unique gifts and talents can accomplish. If nothing else inspires us, that alone should nudge us into completing our assignments here on earth.
