Just so we don’t miss it, each of the synoptic Gospels quote Jesus as saying, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” What do we do with that?
Having been in missions mobilization on every continent, I find that it could be said, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into service among the nations.”
For a camel to go through a small opening in the Jerusalem wall – the eye of the needle, the camel has to be stripped of anything weighing him down and get on his knees. This is a great picture of what we must do to serve the Lord. However, just like us, it is likely the camel needed to be pulled or pushed through to the goal.
The writer to the Hebrews expresses the same idea in Chapter 12. “Let us lay aside every weight, … and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” In our Western cultures we have a lot of weights: busyness takes our time, endless opportunities take our talent, and stuff that will decay drains our treasures.
